Success Protecting Wildlife While Saving Cats
Thoughtful intervention and responsible management are allowing protected birds and cats to coexist on Lanai. Cats found across the island, including those rescued from sensitive bird nesting areas are brought to live safely at the sanctuary. Where they’re given a permanent home. While conservation efforts continue to support the survival of Lanai’s endangered bird species.
Conservationists can Identify which animals preyed on birds and their research shows that only two native bird deaths were caused by cats in 2019 and 2020. Since 2021 there have been no cat related bird deaths on Lanai!
Looking Ahead – 2025-26
The Lanai Cat Sanctuary has faced twin financial challenges from both the 2020 pandemic and the wildfires on Maui. 2025 is bringing the added challenge of rising operating costs (30%+) fueled by inflation
As a result, the Lanai Cat Sanctuary enters its FY25 with a primary focus on securing the financial stability necessary to safeguard Lanai’s cats and the sanctuary. A new fundraising goal of $450,000 has been set to meet these challenges.
