Lanai Cat Sanctuary Releases Impact Report 2023-2024

The Lanai Cat Sanctuary recently released their first ever impact report that highlights the positive difference visitors and supporters are making. Executive Director Keoni Vaughn characterized the past year “as one of resilience and growth”.  He also shared that “Just as visitor numbers were recovering from COVID-19 Maui experienced devastating wildfires resulting in a 30% drop in visitors for the year”.

Thanks to generous donor contributions and support of its visitors the Lanai Cat Sanctuary was able to expand, now caring for over 800 cats. Welcoming additional new rescues and doing exchanges related to fire rescue cats – in partnership with Maui Humane Society, the Oregon Humane Society and Humane Society of Silicon Valley.

Success Protecting Wildlife While Saving Cats

Thoughtful intervention and responsible management are allowing protected birds and cats to coexist on Lanai. Cats found across the island, including those rescued from sensitive bird nesting areas are brought to live safely at the sanctuary. Where they’re given a permanent home. While conservation efforts continue to support the survival of Lanai’s endangered bird species.

Conservationists can Identify which animals preyed on birds and their research shows that only two native bird deaths were caused by cats in 2019 and 2020. Since 2021 there have been no cat related bird deaths on Lanai!

Looking Ahead – 2025-26

The Lanai Cat Sanctuary has faced twin financial challenges from both the 2020 pandemic and the wildfires on Maui.  2025 is bringing the added challenge of rising operating costs (30%+) fueled by inflation

As a result, the Lanai Cat Sanctuary enters its FY25 with a primary focus on securing the financial stability necessary to safeguard Lanai’s cats and the sanctuary.  A new fundraising goal of $450,000 has been set to meet these challenges.
