Maui Student Advances to Win Top Hawaii Rotary Youth Foundation Scholarship
This year, as reported by Maui Now, seven Rotary clubs throughout Maui County awarded $5,000 scholarships to outstanding graduating seniors through the Hawaii Rotary Youth Foundation. Kamakanoweo Kekauoha-Schultz was one of these recipients and went on to compete at the state level, where he earned the foundation’s highest honor.
Kamakanoweo Kekauoha-Schultz, a senior at King Kekaulike High School, received the prestigious $10,000 Joanna L. Sullivan Scholarship from the Hawaiʻi Rotary Youth Foundation. Representing the Rotary Club of Upcountry Maui, he was selected after a competitive process that included both local and statewide interviews.
Attending University of Hawai‘i at Hilo
Kekauoha-Schultz plans to attend the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo, where he will pursue a double major in Hawaiian studies and environmental science. He expressed deep gratitude for the scholarship, sharing his dedication to education, conservation, and serving his community. Inspired by the work of Rotary clubs around the world, he said he is proud to represent the Rotary ‘ohana with aloha.
Maui Clubs Awarded Scholarships
In addition, the following students were selected by the six other Maui Clubs for $5,000 awards:
- Sharmaine Elan, Lānaʻi High School – Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset (UH Mānoa, computer engineering/computer science)
- Chris Salem, Maui Prep – Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunrise (UH Mānoa, Shidler College of Business)

About the Hawaiʻi Rotary Youth Foundation

Update on the Rotary Club of Lāna‘i
The Rotary Club of Lāna‘i awarded 8 Hawaiʻi Rotary Youth Foundation Scholarships between 2016-2024 to Lāna‘i Students. I am saddened to announce that the Club decided to cease meeting at the end of 2024. We will be updating the optional field on our booking form and adding the Lāna‘i Youth Center.
Social Enterprise Works – Good Things Can Happen
The Rotary Club of Lāna‘i was a community organization that Lost on Lana‘i, Brad and Kara chose to support. That support was made possible by our guests booking our day trips and activities.
In turn the members of the Lāna‘i Rotary Club with the support of the Hawaiʻi Rotary Youth Foundation were able to award $40,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors from Lana‘i High. In short, good things happen when you mix in a little social enterprise with community organizations combining their efforts to work together in common cause.
