Whale Season Returns to Maui Early: What to Expect in 2025-2026
The humpback whales have arrived! Hawaii’s 2025-2026 whale season is officially underway, with the first sighting recorded off Maui on September 21, 2025 which marks an early start to this annual spectacle.
Early Arrivals Across the Islands
Initial sightings have been reported across multiple islands, including Maui in September, followed by Kauai, and the Big Island’s first sighting off Kona on October 30, 2025. These early arrivals are a promising sign for what’s shaping up to be an exceptional viewing season.
Why Whales Choose Hawaii
Each year, up to 10,000 humpback whales’ journey from Alaska, British Columbia, and eastern Russia to Hawaii’s warm, sheltered waters to breed, give birth, and raise their calves. The shallow, protected channels between island, particularly between Maui, Molokai, and Lanai. An area that provides an ideal nursery ground for mothers and newborns.
Best Spots for Whale Watching
Prime viewing locations include:
- Maui: Lahaina, Ma’alaea, and the Maui-Moloka’i channel
- Big Island: Kona’s calm nearshore waters and bays
- O’ahu: Leeward coasts like Honolulu and Ko Olina
- Kaua’i and Moloka’i: Quieter areas perfect for observing mothers with calves
What to Expect This Season
The early sightings suggest the season is beginning ahead of schedule, with peak activity for calves and juveniles expected between December and March. While the traditional season runs November through April, sightings may continue into spring.
Beyond humpbacks, keep your eyes open for dolphins, pilot whales, and seabirds during your ocean adventures. Whether viewing from shore or boat, Hawaii’s whale season offers unforgettable encounters with these magnificent creatures in one of nature’s most incredible annual migrations.
