More Maui Cats Find New Homes After Wildfires

As recently reported in by Maui News in their April 29 news article, the Maui Humane Society (MHS) continues to face a heartwarming challenge: caring for animals displaced by the August 8th, 2023 wildfires. But thanks to a remarkable collaboration, 50 cats are on their way to new beginnings!

Maui, California, and Beyond: A Multi-State Rescue Mission

MHS joined forces with the Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV), Lanai Cat Sanctuary (LCS), and Greater Good Charities to find forever homes for these deserving felines. This airlift included cats from Lahaina, some surrendered to MHS, and others from LCS. All these cats either lacked previous owners or haven’t been reclaimed.

HSSV, located in Milpitas, California, will place these cats up for adoption or find them loving homes with local rescue partners. This broader reach allows more people to welcome a Maui or Lanai cat into their hearts.

Collaboration for the Greater Good

This story goes beyond a simple transfer. MHS’s CEO, Dr. Lisa Labrecque, played a key role by providing medical exams and health certifications for the LCS cats. This partnership is a two-way street: MHS previously helped LCS by taking in over 200 outdoor cats from Lahaina. In return, MHS will rehome 200 socialized cats from LCS, including 35 on this flight.

Greater Good Charities, a global non-profit championing people, pets, and the planet, played a critical role. Their Vice President of Pet Transport, Erin Robbins, coordinated the entire operation – from chartering the plane to supervising the cats on their journey from Maui to California. Greater Good Charities also assisted MHS with an earlier transport right after the fires, making space for displaced animals.

A Heartfelt Reunion

Dr. Labrecque expressed her deep gratitude for this collaborative effort. “This transport is a major milestone,” she said, “but it’s also incredibly personal because of the organizations involved. My career in animal welfare began at Lanai Cat Sanctuary, and it’s inspiring to see these groups, along with Greater Good Charities, come together for these fire survivors.”
