Getting from Maui to Lanai: The Ferry
The only way to get from Maui to Lanai without flying is the Expeditions passenger ferry. They run three round trips a day across the Auau Channel between Maalaea Harbor on Maui and Manele Harbor on Lanai. The crossing takes roughly 1 hour and 15–20 minutes each way. All inclusive itineraries, with ferry and shuttle transfers included and ferry tickets only are available at Best Price since Lost on Lanai does not charge extra fees at check out.
Maalaea Harbor (Maui) departures: 6:30 AM, 11:00 AM, 3:30 PM
Manele Harbor (Lanai) departures: 8:30 AM, 1:00 PM, 5:30 PM
Boarding closes 10 minutes before each departure, and Expeditions asks passengers to check in at least 30-45 minutes early. Bring a copy of your purchase email on your phone and a photo ID — tickets are held “will call style” at the Maalaea ticket booth. Just check in with the Expeditions’ attendant to get your ferry tickets.
A few practical notes for first-timers:
- Parking at Maalaea Harbor is paid parking ($1/hour via QR code or pay station); ride share and cabs are also common. Please allow extra time to find a parking spot.
- Each passenger is allowed two bags and one carry-on at no charge; bikes, surfboards over 7 feet, and kayaks require advance arrangements and a fee. Child car seats are not required on the ferry of shuttles. For kamaaina and kapuna discounts contact Expeditions directly.
- As with any boating activity, if you’re prone to seasickness, consider taking medication beforehand and sitting on the lower deck toward the rear of the air conditioned main cabin. Open air seating may be found at the rear section of the upper deck.

Transportation on Lanai
Lanai has just one taxi and one shuttle service, so most day-trippers prebook transfers rather than arranging transportation on arrival. Your options:
- Shuttle transfers (most popular): Lost on Lanai packages include round-trip shuttle service from Manele Harbor to Lanai City and/or the Lanai Cat Sanctuary. Shuttle drivers meet the ferry at the gangway holding a “Lanai City Shuttle Service” sign.
- Independent/ferry-only travel: If you book ferry tickets without a package, there is only one shuttle operator on the island, and each one-way transfer cost $15 per person, cash only. Reservations in advance are recommended.
- Walking: Hulopoe Beach is an easy, flat 4/10-mile walk from Manele Harbor — no shuttle needed if the beach is your only stop.

The shuttle ride between the harbor and the Cat Sanctuary takes about 20 minutes (30 if it stops in town first). The last pickup from the sanctuary is at 3:00 PM when the sanctuary closes. Additional scheduled pickups are at 11:30 AM and 1:00 PM. The schedule is timed to match ferry departures and itineraries that include transfers to Lanai City or Hulopoe Beach.

Hulopoe Beach
A short walk from Manele Harbor, Hulopoe Beach is consistently ranked among Hawaii’s best beaches, with calm, protected water, tide pools, and snorkeling along the rocky point. Public restrooms and freshwater showers are on-site. Spinner dolphins are occasionally spotted in the bay, though never guaranteed.
Lanai City

Where to Eat in Lanai City
Guests typically take about 30–45 minutes for breakfast or lunch. A few notes worth knowing before you go: Pele’s Other Garden is closed for lunch on weekends, Blue Ginger is cash-only, and the new Lanai Bowl is a great option in the afternoons.
