Update – Mayor Bissen Announces West Maui Final Phase Re-Opening November 1

Mayor Richard Bissen has announced the continuation of the phased re-opening of West Maui to visitors, with the remaining area from Kahana to Kaʻanapali set to open on November 1. This decision follows discussions with various stakeholders, including the Mayorʻs Lāhainā Advisory Team and the American Red Cross, and takes into account positive feedback from the initial phase of re-opening.

The November 1 re-opening will combine the final two planned phases and is aimed at allowing businesses and workers to prepare. Mayor Bissen has received assurances from the Red Cross regarding housing for displaced Lāhainā residents, and the County is working with other partners to develop child care programs for displaced families. The focus remains on sheltering around 7,000 survivors, and the collaboration with hotels and the American Red Cross will continue.

The first phase of re-opening, from Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua to Kahana Villa, began on October 8. Mayor Bissen and his advisory team designed the phased approach to facilitate the return of residents to work, establish childcare options, arrange schooling for children, and address housing needs for those in temporary shelter at hotels. This approach prioritizes a gradual return of visitors to West Maui hotel properties and the surrounding area.
