Highlights of the Haleakala Hiking Tour
As we drive up the mountain and go through several climate zones and varied landscapes, we talk story about Maui’s geology, history, and rich cultural heritage.

After a short stop at the visitor center, we start on our first hike from the summit, a moderate 2 mile (roundtrip) on the aptly named Sliding Sands trail for the most dramatic views into Haleakala’s large “crater.”

Don’t let the short distance fool you: as you hike back up the trail at almost 10,000 feet elevation, you’ll likely break a sweat! We can make this hike shorter or longer based on how you feel.

We then head down to Halemau’u trail head and hike 2.2 miles (roundtrip) through native shrubs, where we might see a few endemic species of birds. From there, if the weather is clear, we enjoy a very different viewpoint into the crater from its northern rim, and possibly the North Shore.

Another option is to go to a lower elevation and take the nature trail at Hosmer’s Grove, which is much shorter and easier but still allows us to see native shrubs and endemic birds.

This tour includes hot & cold beverages and water, snacks, and a picnic lunch.

IMPORTANT REQUIREMENTS
This tour requires intermediate fitness levels. We can shorten the hike to fit your abilities, however you must be able to hike unassisted and at elevation for 1 to 2 hours. If you’re not sure, please book our Haleakala & Iao Valley or Upcountry tour for a more mellow sightseeing experience of Haleakala.

For this hiking tour, you MUST wear and bring appropriate gear for safety reasons:
no cotton shirt or pants, no jeans, hoodie or sweater for warmth, hiking shoes or boots, or comfortable sneakers, no open-toe shoes or sandals (although you can bring them for after the hike!), hat, sunglasses, rain jacket, backpack.

Let us know if you don’t have the required equipment: we can bring extra rain jackets, and backpacks for you. You can also borrow our hiking poles!

Minimum 12 years old.
High elevation can be hard on the little ones, contact us at (844) 550-6284 if your children are young & able hikers, and we’ll discuss options.

We reserve the right to alter the itinerary at any time if we deem our guests’ physical abilities or gear might create a safety issue.

This tour is ideal for hikers, adventurers, and anyone who loves a bit of a challenge!
