7 Sacred Pools & Bamboo Forest Hike
This tour is for adventurers and hikers who want to explore beyond the postcard views and get their feet dirty!
With the 7 Sacred Pools & Bamboo Forest Hike, get ready for an amazing 10-11 hour road trip of a lifetime, filled with adventures, waterfalls, a bamboo forest, black sand beach, delicious treats, and drop-dead gorgeous views of the Valley Isle.
With our sister company Explore Maui Nature, we’re now one of the only two private tour companies with a hiking permit into Haleakala National Park. On this tour, you visit the Kipahulu section of the Park, and get to admire the world-famous Seven Sacred Pools, aka ‘Oheo Gulch (note the pools may not be open for swimming), and get to hike up the valley on the Pipiwai trail, alongside amazing waterfalls, through a bamboo forest, and past an ancient banyan tree.
Here is what you can expect on the 7 Sacred Pools & Bamboo Forest Hike:
Pick up time: 7:30AM
We pick you up from your hotel or meet at Target Kahului at 7:30am.
This is a long day, so we highly recommend to meet us at Kahului Target at 7:30am in order to take full advantage of our time on the road. Otherwise, we can pick you up from your hotel on the South side (Kihei, Wailea, Ma’alaea, no extra charge) or from the West Side (Lahaina/Ka’anapali to Kapalua, $265 additional fee).
Highlights of the 7 Sacred Pools & Bamboo Forest Hike
From Kahului, we make our way to the “backside” of Haleakala, starting our loop of East Maui counter clockwise, and going through the Upcountry area of Maui. We head straight to the Kipahulu district of Haleakala National Park, stopping on the way to enjoy the views, and stretch our legs. (NOTE: going all the way around is weather-dependent and cannot be guaranteed).
In the National Park, we can stop by the visitor center before heading on the trail that takes us to the ‘Oheo Gulch, commonly known as the Seven Sacred Pools–a dramatic series of pools and waterfalls that wash up in the rough ocean.
We then go up the Pipiwai trail for a magical 2-hour hike up and down the valley. We pass a huge banyan tree, walk through an eerie bamboo forest, and make it up to 300-foot tall Waimoku waterfall.
After that, we head to Hana for a well-deserved lunch at one of the local food trucks. In the afternoon, we come back on the most famous and scenic part of the Road to Hana through lush rainforest. We stop at the Wai’anapanapa State Park to see the amazing Black Sand Beach, and at waterfalls along the way.
Remember it is YOUR private tour, so talk to your guide about what YOU like and want to do!
IMPORTANT NOTE: this tour requires an intermediate fitness level allowing you to hike unassisted for 2-2.5 hours, 3.4 miles round trip, with an elevation gain of 820 feet, on a trail that is often muddy. If you’re not sure this is for you, give us a call at (844) 550-6284, or book the Unique Road to Hana or Classic Road to Hana tour, which do not include the National Park and allow more flexibility of stops and activities.
This tour is ideal for honeymoon couples, avid hikers, adventuring friends, families with active teenagers, photo enthusiasts, “bucket-listers”…
