Hōkūleʻa Voyaging Canoe Arrives at Māʻalaea Harbor on Maui: A Celebration of Hawaiian Culture and Wayfinding
The legendary voyaging canoe, Hōkūleʻa, has made its way to the shores of Maui, docking at Māʻalaea Harbor on Sunday after spending a week on the island of Lānaʻi. As part of the Polynesian Voyaging Society’s Pae ʻĀina Statewide Sail, the crew is continuing their mission of sharing the rich history and cultural significance of Hōkūleʻa with residents and visitors alike.
Celebrating Cultural Heritage and Mālama Honua
The Hōkūleʻa’s journey around the Hawaiian Islands is a vital part of the ongoing effort to preserve and celebrate traditional Hawaiian navigation and environmental stewardship. During its recent stop on Lānaʻi, the crew hosted educational events, including canoe tours, stargazing, and a special presentation for participants of the Lānaʻi Keiki Fishing Competition. The Pae ʻĀina sail’s purpose is to foster “cultural and educational experiences and exchanges focused on mālama honua (caring for our island Earth),” reminding us all of the importance of protecting the environment and preserving Hawaiian traditions.
Maui Dockside Canoe Tours and Presentations
Maui residents and visitors are invited to take part in the exciting opportunity to tour Hōkūleʻa and engage with the crew through dockside events. The tours will offer insights into the art of Polynesian wayfinding and the mission of the Pae ʻĀina voyage.
**Canoe Tour Dates at Māʻalaea Harbor:**
– **Oct. 14 to Oct. 18:** 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
– **Oct. 19:** 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Additionally, the crew will host a special presentation at the **Maui Ocean Center** on **Oct. 18 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.** Visitors can learn more about the voyage and the ongoing cultural and educational initiatives that the Polynesian Voyaging Society promotes.
Looking Ahead: Hōkūleʻa’s Next Journey
After its stay on Maui, the Hōkūleʻa is scheduled to depart Māʻalaea on **Oct. 24**, continuing its Pae ʻĀina sail across the Hawaiian Islands. This statewide voyage is a precursor to Hōkūleʻa’s larger Moananuiākea circumnavigation of the Pacific, which will resume in March 2025, extending the canoe’s message of mālama honua to communities around the world.
Don’t miss your chance to witness history and be inspired by the stories of traditional Polynesian voyaging. Join the crew and learn how we can all contribute to mālama honua—caring for our island Earth. For more information on the Pae ʻĀina sail and Hōkūleʻa’s journey, visit the official Hōkūleʻa website.
